Santos Bounces Back with Back-to-Back Win at Stafford
Leaps to Eighth in Points
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 2, 2011) – Bobby Santos drove the No. 4 Mystic Missile Dodge to victory in the NASCAR WhelenModified Tour (NWMT) Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway, backing up his win the last NWMT race at the track. The win propelled Santos from 31st to eighth in NWMT point standings.
Santos posted the fifth-fastest time of 17.972 seconds in practice and laid down the third-fastest qualifying lap of 17.992 seconds. When the green flag dropped on the Tech-Net Spring Sizzler pres. by CARQUEST, Santos shot to the lead by the first lap. By lap 60, he pulled out a lead of over two seconds in the No. 4Mystic Missile Dodge.
The first caution flag waved on lap 85, and Santos drove the No. 4 Mystic Missile Dodge down pit road for service, relinquishing the lead to Ted Christopher who stayed out on the racetrack. The Mystic Missile team restarted fifth. By lap 95, the Tommy Baldwin Racing development driver worked his way up to the third spot.
A caution on lap 111 allowed the field to bunch up again. Shortly after the restart, Santos drove past Todd Szegedy for second position and set his sights on Christopher. Lap 120 saw a hard charge by Santos to try to take the top spot. The Franklin, Mass., native raced Christopher hard for the lead until the third yellow flag waved on lap 132.
When the green flag dropped on lap 138, Santos charged to the lead. He held off the field for five more restarts, including a red flag, and took the checkers after 200 laps of racing. The victory was Santos' sixth career win and his third at Stafford Motor Speedway. Santos and the Mystic Missile team won three of the last four races at the .5-mile racetrack.
The victory shot Santos and team from 31st to eighth in the NWMT point standings. The No. 4 now sits 81 points behind point leader Rowan Pennink.
"The car was just good from lap one," said Santos. "We passed both the leaders on the first lap and led a bunch of laps. The guys gave me a good pit stop. We had a ton of restarts at the end, which was kind of frustrating, but we had a good race. Every restart we were getting a good lead, but Rowan was really good at the end of the race and was right with us. There was definitely some pressure to get a better restart than him because he was as quick as we were. If we made a mistake, he probably would have got us. It was really exciting to win the 40th Spring Sizzler and to win again at Stafford. The track has been really good to me."
"I couldn't believe we were up to eighth in the point standings," Santos continued. "I thought we would be 15th or so. It's definitely a good thing that we are back in the hunt. It's still early to think about points, but it's much better than where we were."
Santos will hit the track in his family-owned sprint car Thursday, May 12th at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis for the USAC Sprint Car pavement event. He will return to Stafford Motor Speedway for the next NWMTevent Friday, May 27th.
